The Rag & Bone Industrial Complex: David Neville and Marcus Wainwright Toast Their New Soho Digs... - Tuesday, 11/3/2009 2:15 PM

With the Help of Longtime Pal Sienna Miller.

Rag & Bone's David Neville and Marcus Wainwright already have two shops downtown (a men's and a women's store, both on Christopher Street in the West Village). Nonetheless, their latest Mercer Street outpost (119 Mercer Street NYC 10012 212.219.2204) represents a coming home of sorts for the design duo.

"Denise Williamson, who represented the designers when they were first starting out, has her offices upstairs in this building," explained Rag & Bone womenswear director Scott Allgauer, at the store's opening fete last Monday. "So you could say that, with the opening of this latest outpost, the brand has come full circle."

The party drew loyalists like Euan Rellie and Sienna Miller, who is in town for her Broadway play ("After Miss Julie") until December 20th. Miller "has known these boys since they were 15. In fact, David was my first boyfriend." Not sure if she meant "boyfriend" or "boy-FRIEND;" suffice to say they have remained close ever since and the love and admiration is mutual.

Other guests, such as Meredith Melling Burke, Howard Socol, Pierre Rougier and the latest model for Rag & Bone jeans, Sheila Marquez, nibbled on mozzarella, sundried tomatoes, and risotto cakes while admiring the airy, yet industrial, space of the new store, that doubles as a gallery with a rotating selection of photography. On display for this event were blow-ups of Joseph Holmes' industrially-themed photographs, which he took over the course of approximately six years. When asked how this motif was chosen, Holmes demurred, "I really have no idea. We actually put this together in less than two weeks. I think [the designers] just really like the work, and thought that it somehow reflected and complemented the aesthetic of their store."

Marcus Wainwright put it more succinctly: "It is very 'Rag & Bone’, as is the work of all of our rotating artists." Next up on the agenda? British minimalist photographer Mark Borthwick. For those who like a bit of art with their apparel, Rag & Bone Soho is undoubtedly a must destination.
