KINKY BOOTS KICKS ASS

I KNEW that “Kinky Boots” was going to be THE show on Broadway this season. It seemed to have the same buzz about it as “Book of Mormon” and “Spamalot”… a coolness factor that rarely sets up shop on the Great White Way. That’s not to say that the revivals of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” and “Cat on a Hot Tim Roof” weren’t wonderful but, despite the performances/performers, we basically knew what we were getting there. And there’s always the chance that no matter how cool the elements are and how big the HYPE, something can just go TERRIBLY wrong (yes, I am talking about “Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark”) (omg).

The first I ever heard of “Kinky Boots” was the 1960s Brit song sung by Honor Blackman (AKA “Pussy Galore”) and Patrick MacNee, the stars of the TV series “The Avengers”. I was introduced ... Read More

“WOMEN, WAR & PEACE” POWER BREAKFAST

I am so glad I went to the breakfast for “WOMEN, WAR & PEACE”, a series to be aired on five consecutive Tuesdays beginning October 11th on PBS.  Check-in was 7AM, which is usually when I go to bed, so I just stayed up all night.  I couldn’t take any chances because the UN was in session and EVERYONE was in town, so the security made any sort of travel to that area problematic.  Because the breakfast was at The Four Seasons restaurant, we were definitely in the area.

Of course, as is the norm in NYC, if you give yourself enough time, you have no problems and arrive painfully early. The streets and subways were overflowing with security, but no one was zoning in on me for a pat-down or bag check.  I stood with all the photographers against the building next door, checking my cell to waste time.  When I ... WHEN SPINNING IS NOT ENOUGH: WELCOME TO SoulCycle’s SoulBands!

There I was, actually choosing bikes in the FRONT ROWS of my spin classes at SoulCycle, when I decided that, maybe, I was ready for a new challenge. I was still sweating like a pig during every class and my body was still pleading for mercy somewhere around the middle of the second songs, but I guess I’m just more of a masochist than I care to believe…or more competitive. I’ve never felt competitive with others, but very much with myself. I mean, what’s the point of repetition if there’s something else, something MORE?

I decided to check out what are called SoulBands classes. That meant that I had to return to SoulCycle’s Tribeca location because the Union Square studio doesn’t have them. Though I love being only five minutes from Soul Union Square, it’s really just a 15 minute bike ride using the Waterfront Greenway ... Read More

SOUL CYCLE PUTS A NEW SPIN ON IT: UNION SQUARE EAST SETTLES IN

Boy, was I happy when Soul Cycle opened up a branch in my neighborhood! Well, it’s relatively in my hood: I live on the Gramercy/Murray Hill border, an under-the-radar area nicknamed Curry Hill. I had been going to the TriBeCa facility, but this is a difference between 10 minutes and 45 minutes travel time for me. I ride my bike (unless the weather REALLY sucks), so this couldn’t have come at a better time. During the winter, zipping downtown on the Hudson River Park Greenway was a (frosty) breeze. However, as soon as the weather got better, the path gradually resembled Times Square during rush hour. It wasn’t so much the runners, skaters or skateboarders that were the pains-in-the-ass as much as those enjoying a nice Sunday stroll. Umm…earth to walkers…walk on your own damned turf. The whole experience began to remind ... Read More

READY. SET. RIDE!

This is a fundraiser benefiting ovarian cancer research. I am participating because I am still alive to be able to help others. After battling this disease just last year, I would not be here if it wasn't for the amazing progress that has been made in understanding Ovarian Cancer, which still has only a 20% survival rate. This is the Great White of women's reproductive cancers. Let's kill the beast. We need to raise at least $600 before we can ride. Any and every donation, no matter how small, would be appreciated. I am riding in tribute to Genevieve Gorman, who is Alison Moore's aunt. She is presently in stage 4 of this horrid disease.

Quite frankly, I was NOT excited to see this because I thought, “Here we go again…’The Wrestler’ was so huge that we’re now going to get all these failed-athlete-makes-comeback flicks.” The executive producer of “The Fighter” IS Darren Aronofsky, who produced and directed “The Wrestler”, so it seemed like he had discovered a winning genre, much like a lot of the Mafia-entrenched directors/producers form the 70s (you know who I mean).

This time, however, the director is David O. Russell (“I Heart Huckabees”, “Spanking the Monkey”, and lots more) who has reteamed with one of his “Three Kings” stars, Mark Wahlberg. (You didn’t think it would be George Clooney, did you? If you don’t know what I’m referring to, you get a D- for your knowledge of Hollywood gossip).

The beginning of the movie leads one to believe that this is, indeed, “The Wrestler II”, as we’re presented with ... Read More

“Spinning? What is that?” My Dutch Nephew (we made that title up in order to describe our relationship) Keenan Brill (yes, the infamous Dianne’s son) asked me. “Is it sexual?” I assured the suave Euro-teen it was not. We have a take-no-prisoners relationship that occasionally makes me pause, considering I literally used to bounce him on my knee. Now I come up to his knees.

When I briefly explained spinning to him, he next asked me why I wanted to act like a hamster. I retorted that it was better to behave like one than have one lost up my bum, Somehow I erased that message by mistake, so I told him I’d tell him all about it later. It didn’t matter: He’s too young to understand the Urban Myth reference.

“Later” was that night’s performance by Joey Arias and Joey’s post-performance birthday party. ... Read More

The Modcousin really did it this time. He’s the biggest Ricky Gervais fan and was determined to catch his NYC show. Unfortunately, the price of tickets was rather steep, so it seemed a distant dream. He was bummed. Then, alas, Ricky pulled a fast one. He not only added another show at the Theater at Madison Square Garden (site of the original show), but also added two shows at Hunter. The Modcousin thinks it’s because Gervais lives near there. The Modcousin is such a FAN that he knows such details about Ricky. And yes, that makes me uncomfortable. And should make Ricky uncomfortable.

Anyway…

The point is that, because of the sudden glut of shows, many many scalpers were royally fucked. When the Modcousin sussed this out, he dragged me to the Garden, intent on getting a real bargain. And he ... Read More

In the latter half of the eighties, a very hip theatrical company named Naked Angels came to be. Some of the members were/are Rob Morrow, Gina Gershon, Fisher Stevens, Merrill Holtzman/Jack Merrill (he changed his name between then and now), Kristen Johnston, Matthew Broderick, Marisa Tomei, Joe Mantello, a mess o’ Parkers (Pippin,
Sarah Jessica, Timothy Britten), Ron Rifkin, Lili Taylor, Nancy Travis, Jon Robin Baitz, Patrick Breen…

They garnered their first bit of infamy because another member of their troop was JFK, Jr., whose desire for a theatrical career was as well known as his mom Jackie’s aversion to it. Though Jackie won, John John fed his thwarted ambition by being the MC at the many Naked Angels benefits. In fact, the first time I ever saw Kennedy’s future Mrs. was at one of those splashy benefits, where she was planted on his lap during much of ... Read More

The only way to get through Fashion Week is by exercising careful selection and achieving balance. Do not go to everything you can go to and find other things to do.

When I first went to shows as a member of the audience (I had always been backstage before because I was running the music), I was obsessed. I wanted to go to every show and every after party.

When I had a column in “Paper” magazine, I really had to pack everything in so I could report on all that was hot and groovy. The weird thing was that the shows I really got the biggest kick out of were the Ladies Who Lunch shows: Oscar, Blass, Carolina… The workmanship was extraordinary. Without having to dazzle with a SHOW, they just made you swoon from sheer beauty. Sometimes things veered a bit into the Bar Mitzvah/Mother-of-the-Bride netherworlds, but it was still ... Read More

I like Adam Goldberg’s work…if you’ll excuse the pun on one of his own creations. REALLY. I’ve liked him in movies, on “Entourage” and on talk shows. He does deep, tortured, brooding and menacing really well, but there’s also a sense of humor and intelligence about him.

It was because I like Goldberg so much that I went to see a screening of the movie “(Untitled)”. In addition, it didn’t hurt that Vinnie Jones was also featured: He’s always fun. Lately, I’ve been VERY selective about going to screenings because I’ve taken to seriously questioning whether the movie sounds like something I would want to give over that much time to. I wish I still had the fire in my gut to discover the small gem, but I’ve gone to enough screenings to know these small gems are very very few. In addition, the ... Read More

SHORT VERSION: Yes, it’s totally worth it. Buy your tickets now.

LONG VERSION:

Nearly two years ago, I phoned Michael Musto and asked him if I could be his date when “West Side Story” had its Broadway revival. At the time, he laughed that I was putting in my request so early because he hadn’t even heard about a “WWS” revival. However, the more he thought about it, the more he agreed that it was a good idea. He could think of at least one other person who might be interested and might ask, so I had circumvented that sticky situation. He told me I had to keep reminding him because he had once promised someone they could come with him to a play and then forgot and took someone else. One problem with having been around so damned long (besides the aches and pains & club DJ terror dreams) is that there are many people one has a history with. When my dear husband, the Mod Cousin, told me that he wanted to attend the final performance of Simply Red, I immediately went into a rant about what a HUGE asshole Mick Hucknall was back when. The ginger one was roundly despised by anyone who worked at Palladium because he never failed to act like an entitled jackass whenever he would grace us with his presence. No one would have it. Sometimes I forget that I live in a special city.  After a while, glamorous Manhattan just became HOME.  And what does one do at home?  You know…boring shit…like having to exchange a sweater that I somehow bought in the wrong size, despite having tried it on in the RIGHT size.  THAT was a drag…a mysterious drag, but still a drag.

Therefore, off I went back to Uniglo, hoping the cashmere sale was still on and hoping that they would still have that gorgeous purple turtleneck in the right size.  As I rounded the corner from the 6 train to Broadway, I was confronted by a scene out of a movie! Actually seeing a scene being shot for a movie is so commonplace in NYC, I've ceased asking the workers lounging around outside the trailers what's shooting.  I just quickly glance to see if someone famous is visible and either ... As usual, Betsey’s show was joyous. It’s always fun to see old friends there and Betsey and Chantal’s personalities permeate the atmosphere. You can’t feel depressed at a Betsey Johnson show. Well, you CAN, but it requires great conviction. Before one recent show, a temporary cap suddenly dislodged itself in my mouth, so I became cranky as hell. I was in such PAIN, I had to dislodge the rest of myself and scamper off to the dentist. I missed the entire presentation. It-model, Agyness Deyn…who looks like another of the funny-named spawn of the late infamous Brit mess Paula Yates… meandering about the side door. And many people were going in and out to many trucks. Showtime! I love living so near because I can just leave home right at showtime and, if the start time been held up (as it usually is), I can go back home until it is REALLY slated to go on. I passed a photographer from PMc past, who, though enjoying a beverage and basking in the sun, was bemoaning the lack of celebrities. Poor baby. Really poor baby since, just as I crossed the front of the entrance to the tents, ANNA was click-clacking down the steps to the street. I have absolutely no idea how I met Linda Stein; she just seemed to appear in my life. Her appearances were infrequent, but always a joy. She was just a part of THE SCENE …in its most macro definition. Having arrived in NYC in 1979, I’ll assume that she and Danny Fields were no longer managing The Ramones at that time, so it couldn’t have been through hanging around THEM. I attended a lot of their shows, but it was at the behest of Arturo Vega, who was their artistic director & lighting director. This is a love story.

Though my pink Schwinn Cruiser and I met each other by happenstance, Michael Musto was actually the matchmaker. Mikey has been riding his bike forever and has never tired of extolling the virtues of this form of transportation. Not only does it get him everywhere in much less time, for much less money and is far more reliable (even considering the occasional blown tire or vandalism) than walking, taxis, subways and busses, it didn’t hurt that he gave his year-round pedaling credit for his perky rock-hard posterior. The downside (all puns intended) was his forever expanding foot size, a never-ending horror that has him wearing flip-flops and socks year-round. This quasi-Oriental approach to footwear became a necessity because the $1000 special-ordered shoes he’s been forced to rely on always arrived too small because his feet had grown by the time it took to ... Well…didn’t Fashion Week end in a bang? No sooner did the last tall-drink-of-water stomp down the runway than the city announced that Bryant Park would be unavailable to the CFDA for the next batch of shows in February. Unless some brilliant mind finds a way for The Tents and the skating rink to co-exist in the same space, HOMELESS might be THE Look for Winter 2007. And, as far as the name of the bi-yearly event, it could be that Seventh on 6th will go the way of Bleecker Bob’s (which eventually resided on W. 4th Street).

Nevertheless, if The Tramp becomes all the rage next season, that IS in keeping with fashion’s pattern of going for the opposite from what was dictated the season before. "I wonder what he’ll show?" I have not had a summer vacation since the summer after my first year (and last year) of law school. That was quite a while ago. When I fell into deejaying and, later, writing for magazines, I was stuck in businesses that never allowed for seasonal breaks. When writing for magazines, the summer months are spent writing for Fall issues, which are very important. When deejaying, neither the clubs nor the parties stopped just because the weather suddenly got sultry. There's a new place to drink Downtown and, boy, is it terrific. It's at 157 Lafayette Street at Grand. The lounge's name is Moomia, which is Russian for "Mummy". Why a bar whose theme is Egyptian would have a name that is the Russian translation of a well-known Egyptian word is probably because of its owner, Andrei Lazarev. Now, this begs us to ask why a Russian guy would create an Egyptian bar. Andrei's response to this inquiry had something to do with a book he read as a young boy in Russia. It was a book about two brothers in Egypt and Andrei loved the pictures. So, BOT! (that's Russian for voila), a Russian Egyptian bar was born!

Bet you'll hear THAT one a few times…

But, let me bring you back to a few weeks ago, when Christo and Jeanne-Claude were in the process of creation.  That was also when the Christos were deep in the pockets of those collectors who actually finance these self-indulgent fanciful constructs of theirs. In case you were unaware, it is the drawings of the projects that bring in the millions that Christo and wife use to make these extraordinary artistic statements.

My former brother-in-law, and a great hero and mentor of mine, the late Dr. Amos Cahan, was part of the moneyed fanbase that supported Christo's earliest endeavors.  Amos had been a researcher in Hematology, but a very unhappy one because he preferred living life to practicing medicine.  He always said that his middle name was “Lucky”, which was proven time and time again. ... There were some terrific parties that, for one reason or another, I never got the chance to write about this past year.  The ones that come to mind (what’s left of it) are Susan Magrino and Jim Dunning’s post-nuptial blowout at The Four Seasons Restaurant, the 20th anniversary of Indochine and the opening of Jacob the Jeweler’s new shop on 57th Street.

To honor what I learned in high school English class, I will begin with the first event listed in the above paragraph.  That would be the wedding party Magrino and Dunning threw for their nearest and dearest, ... Read More

When I last reported, my longtime pal, British pop star extraordinaire Marc Almond, had been upgraded to “stable” from “critical” condition in a London hospital. He had finally regained consciousness.  At that point, I hadn’t spoken to him because he had yet to be given a phone.  However, since I heard that he immediately began complaining about EVERYTHING and INSISTED that he be switched to a more comfortable hospital, we knew our boy was BACK!

Marc had been the passenger on a motorcycle slammed into by a car while in a crosswalk in central London.  The ... Read More

Celerie Kemble lost a bet to Boykin Curry at the Christian Louboutin party hosted by Diane von Furstenberg on December 13th .  That’s why you’ll see her high-steppin’ down the steps of the giant stilleto.  What the bet was, we do not know.  If anyone does and would like to share, please contact us.

And then there was the Denzel Incident at Nell’s… I mean…..Noel’s …ummm…NA?  Bad name.  He could have just gone with the whole name and sacrificed only ONE letter, but who am I to judge?

10/28: REPORT FROM VOGUE’S SNEAK PEEK OF DESIGNER MOBILE BY SAMSUNG

You’ll need a sense of humor & sense of irony to appreciate this report from one of our photographers, Nick Papananias:

"The models did not want me to identify them in the pictures I took of them! Am I crazy and/or stupid to assume that usually models like having their names associated with pictures taken of them? Isn’t this the means by which they are separated from the pack? Isn’t this what makes them a valuable commodity? Isn’t this what leads to fame and fortune?

At the "Vogue"/DVF/Samsung event, the models were wearing DVF (Diane Von Furstenberg) and holding the phones. After I took the photos, I would ask the subject whether they wanted me to use their name or just identify them as "model". One of them gave me her name, then, later, told me to pick a good picture ... Read More

Happily, the news is all good.

An automobile crashed into the motorcycle on which Marc and another person were riding.  This calamity occurred on Sunday, October 17th in Central London.  Marc was thrown from the bike and sustained head injuries, even though he was wearing a helmet.  He was originally fighting for his life after emergency surgery. Though still in intensive care, his original critical state was elevated to stable almost immediately.  As I’ve said before, he’s a wee one, but mighty tough.

Just because the last posting was totally about Marc Almond’s experience as a performer at “Fashion Rocks”, I thought it would be fitting to share this discomforting news. A mutual friend informed me, that, while riding as a passenger on someone’s motorbike, Marc was hit by a car.  The accident occurred in central

London.

The original report I received was that he was in critical condition, following surgery for severe head injuries.  I immediately sent an email and made a phonecall to his numbers, on the chance that Marc’s longtime significant other, Langy (Mark Langthorne), would be checking in.

Fashion Rocks!

So, my old(e) pal Marc Almond came to town without any advanced warning. Not that he had had much, himself. Quite unexpectedly, he had found himself invited to perform with the Pussycat Dolls at the "Fashion Rocks" extravaganza that Conde Nast Media Group produced and recorded over Fashion Week at Radio City Music Hall. "They wanted me to sing ‘Tainted Love’." Marc said sardonically. "What else?"

In case you didn’t know, Marc was the lead singer … actually, the ONLY singer… for Soft Cell. In case you are really Pop Culturally ignorant, Soft Cell’s cover of Gloria Jones’ 1964 Northern Soul classic (which is Brit-speak for what we call Beach Music), "Tainted Love", became one of the hugest hits of the Eighties. And, despite having numerous follow-up hits in Europe – both with Soft Cell and as a solo performer-Marc ... Read More

Little bits of fluff…

Macauley Culkin was enjoying a Saturday afternoon stopover with his girlfriend Mila Kunis ("That 70’s Show") at that huge liquor warehouse on Broadway near 8th Street. They had matching black hair. Very cute. They were hovering around the vodkas. "Oh! Look at that one!" Gushed Kunis. "That bottle is SO pretty!" Culkin looked. He said nothing. Just had a beatific grin on his face. "I ALWAYS choose my vodka by the way it looks!" Kunis continued.

A fitting Fashion Week allegory, n’est pas?
