There is nothing like a hot night in New York City and going to an opening of a summer group show, especially one that I was asked to be in. The exhibition is a collection of contemporary imagery inspired by iconic photographs.

Three of my favorite things — pizza, beer, and a fashion line with a charitable edge — all came together Wednesday night to launch Edun’s new “Grow to Sew” Collection at Barneys. “Grow to Sew” is “inspired by the vibrancy of South Africa,” with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting the Conservation Cotton Initiative (CCI) in Uganda, an organic-farming program created by Edun, the Wildlife Conservation Society, and Invisible Children to build sustainable organic-farming communities and provide a fair-trade market for their cotton. The collection mostly comprised the softest tees this side of the equator, the kind that become keepers in any girl’s wardrobe.

Editor Note: We asked Patrick McMullan to break from his traditional routine and give us an idea of what he’s looking forward to at New York Fashion Week. Below is his list of inspiring people, places and things.
Being on the scene for so many years has trained me to spot what’s cool or what’s about to be cool (or at least what I think is!). These are some of the things I have been seeing, doing, and shooting, or want to be seeing, doing, and shooting.

The scene was buzzing at the Steven Kasher Gallery for the opening of two photography shows, “Cynthia MacAdams: Feminist Portraits, 1974–1977” and “Timothy Greenfield-Sanders: Supermodels of the 70s and 80s.” It was girl power all around — both photographers show images that are striking for their candid strength and realness in our current polished world.

The place to be on this cold January night was the Robert Miller Gallery, where Patti Smith and Steven Sebring were celebrating their collaborative exhibit, “Objects of Life.” The gallery space overflowed with photos, paintings, sculptures, and installation pieces; Sebring said there was a lot in back that they couldn’t even fit in.
