Launch of Fortnight
Robert Miller Gallery
October 27, 2010

Fortnight is an online multimedia journal that pairs 14 young individuals from the new media generation in dialogue with like minded mentors from all over the world.

Creative Director, Adam Whitney Nichols was in the right place at the right time when he sat down at a train station next to none other than Patti Smith. That’s what I call one lucky bench.

Combining tradition with innovation this new website is in it’s first week of the first 14 days of collaboration between student and teacher. Wisdom of our forbearers is invaluable in any generation but particularly in this millennium.

This steamy fall night, the Robert Miller Gallery was the setting to salute the new breed that has grown up with the Internet having the capacity to change how we communicate in this century.

Silk/latex/lace and microfinance seem like strange bedfellows?  Well, it is true that with what seems like a sex scandal-a-day from Hollywood to Capitol Hill nothing seems to shock us as strange bedfellows anymore, but still how do these things go together again?

Well, over at Cipriani last night they were "Saving the World on a G-String" where couture lingerie designers showed for the first time in New York City in support of microfinance for women.  The Seven Bar Foundation seemed to find a good metaphor in there somewhere: "Directed by Renata Mutis Black and Kim Hoedeman, the Foundation harnesses the power of the sustainable luxury industry to fuel microfinance, enabling self-sufficiency--as the Foundation's ladder logo represents, it is a hand UP, ... The reception was a wonderful evening, but it was the exhibition itself that proved a glorious triumph.  The works in this exhibition span nearly forty years of the photographer’s career, from Hitchcock with Goose, 1973, (“the first famous person that I shot...”) to Jellyfish Tank at Mandalay Bay Hotel, 2001, three haunting, large-scale abstract photographs from his gorgeous and surreal body of work made in Las Vegas.

Over the past decade, the Pete & Carrie Rozelle Award has been given to a school or school-related program that addressed the educational and social/emotional needs of children with learning disabilities. This annual award has allowed for expanded programmatic and staff development opportunities that focus on incorporating effective research-based practices into classroom and school-wide practice.

Yesterday, at the NCLD's First Annual Celebrating Our School Luncheon, two NYC area schools--one public and one private--were recognized for their dedication.  Anderson Cooper was there to honor these schools and award them with the cash award of $2,500.

Last night THE CINEMA SOCIETY & EVERLON DIAMOND KNOT COLLECTION hosted a screening of "WELCOME TO THE RILEYS," a new indie drama starring everyone's favorite gangster James Gandolfini and everyone's favorite vampire Kristen Stewart.  The cast is rounded out by the great character actors Melissa Leo and David Jensen.

The film revolves around a couple whose marriage is slowly disintegrating (Gandolfini and Leo) after the death of their daughter.  The husband makes an unlikely friend with a stripper (Stewart) and this platonic bond may supply the key to renewing his marriage.  It is a story about finding an ally in the most unlikely of people and finding hope in the most unlikely of places.

At last night's screening the stars James Gandolfini, Kristen Stewart and Melissa Leo, and director Jake Scott, were all in attendance; as well as James Woods, Danny DeVito, S. Epatha Merkerson, Russell Simmons, Gerard Butler, Adam Duritz, and ... Read More

Last night AMC and Chase Sapphire hosted the Mad Men Season 4 Finale Viewing Party for Chase Card Members at the 21 Club in Midtown Manhattan.  Cast members Jon Hamm, Matthew Weiner, Christina Hendricks, Elisabeth Moss and Cara Buono were all in attendance.

When "Mad Men" premiered in 2007, it was immediately hailed as "one of the best shows on television" by numerous critics.  Whereas many shows quickly fail to live up to their hype, this ultra-stylish look into the world of ad agencies in 60s has continued to dazzle both critics and fans, even as it comes to the close of its fourth season.  With numerous Emmy and Golden Globe Awards under its belt, the show shows no sign of slowing down--2011 looks to be another promising awards season for this cast and crew.

The Finale Viewing Party and the final episode itself were both great capstones to a phenomenal season, and they left us all chomping at the bit for the next season...and ... Read More

SAMBA SANS TRISTESSE

We don’t need no education. We don’t need no mind control”- Another Brick in the Wall -Pink Floyd

This season the Spring 2011 Fashion Shows were at Lincoln Center. The much more accessible new location also suggested the possibility of the addition of an artistic element to the usual cat walk run. And Carlos Miele, Brazil’s most exportable and exported designer, took full and good advantage of this chance. He fused his show with another one, the performance of Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in the Wall by ‘bad girl’ mega watt international Bossa Nova crossover star Bebel Gilberto.

In a body hugging, brightly patterned strapless cocktail sheath, her dark hair loose over her tanned shoulders, Bebel sang solo and without a break from the time the hem of the first design made its appearance on the runway until Carlos led her by the hand to a finale ... Read More
