On November 23, 2001, the Friends of the Costume institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art were invited to Balenciaga Spanish Master with Oscar de la Renta and Hamish Bowels at the Queen Sophia Spanish Institute on Park Avenue.

We gathered over prosecca and canapés under a portrait of the beautiful blond queen in the oak paneled reception room on the second floor of the Institute. First, Inmaculada de Habsburgo explained how Margaret Strong, the Marquise de Cuevas, and a right thinking neighbor had saved the building from demolition in the 1950’s. On Monday, November 22nd, Lighthouse International's 2010 Annual LightYears Gala Saluted the Art of Film and Honored Robert Osborne (host of Turner Classic Movies), Charles S. Cohen (President/CEO of Cohen Bros. Reality Corporation), as well as philanthropists Clo Cohen, Dr. Madeleine Sherak and Tom Sherak.  Proceeds from the event benefitted Lighthouse International's mission to fight vision loss through prevention, treatment and empowerment.

S.L.E. Lupus Foundation Hosts a Moving and Elegant Evening Honoring 40 Years of Leadership

On Monday, November 22nd, the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation marked its 40th Anniversary with a glittering “Life Without Lupus” gala at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall, which raised over $2 million for lupus awareness and research.  Gala honorees Susan Golick and her father Morrie Golick began the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation in Susan’s living room 40 years ago, shortly after she was diagnosed with the disease.  “There’s nothing like a father’s love for his daughter,” added Gala co-hosts Morning Joe’s Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough.

The Foundation also honored companies Human Genome Sciences and GlaxoSmithKline, who have partnered on the potential first new treatment for lupus in more than 50 years.

On Thursday, November 18th, the 13th Annual Collaborating For a Cure Dinner and Auction was held.  With a sold-out crowd of nearly 1,400 guests, the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) celebrated the 13th Annual Collaborating For a Cure Dinner and Auction, headlined by Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow at the New York City landmark Park Avenue Armory.

The evening’s live and silent auctions offered guests the opportunity to bid on a selection of exciting items, including a Seven-Night-Stay for up to 10 guests in the Ian Fleming Villa at the Goldeneye Resort via Private Jet Service, which garnered the highest bid of the evening with $100,000.

It was a great night for Sheryl Crow fans, an even greater for the auction winners and absolutely the greatest night for the search for a cure.

On Thursday, November 18th, The METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART Hosted its APOLLO CIRCLE BENEFIT sponsored by Carolina Herrera.  The event took place in the shadows of the Temple of Dendur in the Sackler Wing of the Museum.  The benefit's theme--Return to Paradise--was all about finding inspiration in the works from the Met's collection of 18th-century paintings of Indian palace life.  The event benefited  the Metropolitan's Fund for Art Conservation.  Paul Sevigny provided the night's music, and there was plenty of dancing, cocktails and sweet and savory sweets all in one of the greatest, and most artful, locations in the world.

Golub and Emmy-award winning journalist and Dateline NBC correspondent, Chris Hansen with the Strength of Our Society Award at its 2010 Gala on November 18 at The Plaza Hotel in Manhattan.  The event was hosted by journalist Deborah Norville and included a special performance by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Sophie B. Thursday, November 18th, OUT Magazine Celebrated their 16th Annual OUT 100 CELEBRATION, the year’s most anticipated LGBT event.  Buick partnered with OUT Magazine to present the awards, and the event featured three of their brand new car models throughout the venue. The event had three themes: Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball, The Stonewall Riots and Studio 54.  During the event, the servers and bartenders had three costume-changes to correspond to the three themes.  This years list, distilled through the lens of three distinctly different gatherings which helped to shape LGBT culture and transform the LGBT movement, OUT magazine chronicled the 100 LGBT movers and shakers who made big impressions on the cultural and social fabrics of this year.

AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY's 2010 MUSEUM GALA was held on Thursday, November 18th and featured a performance by none other than ELTON JOHN.  A much-anticipated highlight of the fall season, the Museum Gala is the American Museum of Natural History’s largest annual benefit.  This year's event included a dinner and Elton John performing a selection of hits including “Your Song,” “Rocket Man,” “Benny and the Jets,” and “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” plus a song from his new album with Leon Russell, “You’re Never Too Old (To Hold Somebody).”  He received seven standing ovations from the crowd at the Museum.

Hosted its 20th Annual A MAGICAL EVENING Benefit Gala at the New York Marriott Marquis
.  IBM, Marsha Garces Williams & The Gonzalez-Bunster Family were Honored at the benefit event.  IBM was presented with the Visionary Leadership Award; Marsha Garces Williams was presented with the Dana Reeve HOPE Award; and the Gonzalez-Bunster Family was presented with the Christopher Reeve Spirit of Courage Award.

 On Wednesday, November 17th, MARTHA STEWART & MTV's ANDREW JENKS Hosted the 3RD ANNUAL MARTHA STEWART CENTER for LIVING at Mount Sinai GALA.  The event honored James and Alexandra Lebenthal and raised money to support the Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mount Sinai, which was dedicated to Martha’s late mother, Martha Kostrya, in 2007 upon the center’s opening.

The Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mount Sinai serves to promote and facilitate access to healthcare resources for older adults and to enhance the public perception of aging.

On Tuesday, November 16th, the Young Friends of ACRIA Launch Party was held, Benefiting the AIDS Community Research Initiative of America (ACRIA).  The Young Friends of ACRIA is a dynamic leadership group for young professionals interested in raising awareness about ACRIA, advancing its mission, furthering their own understanding of the newest developments in HIV research and supporting people living with the disease and those most-affected communities.

On Tuesday, November 16th, the Soho House, Parsons School of Design and the Huffington Post's Style Section co-hosted a FORGOTTEN FASHION Party.  It celebrated the release of Let's Bring Back by Lesley M. M. Blume, a Huffington Post contributing Style Editor.  The book delves into the world of forgotten things: "Whatever happened to cuckoo clocks?" it asks.  Or: "Whatever happened to hot toddies?"  And are these things--and many more--due for a revival?

An event for the Technogym U.S. Showroom Launch was held on Tuesday, November 16th.  Technogym, a world leader in fitness and wellness, launched their first U.S. wellness center.  It is located in the Soho neighborhood on 70 Greene Street and will be a one-stop education center, retail location and showroom.

On Tuesday, November 16, 2010, The Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center’s (MSKCC) Associates Committee and GUCCI hosted the annual Fall Party at the Four Seasons Restaurant.  The evening included an auction, cocktails, dinner, and dancing for a high-profile crowd of tastemakers from the worlds of fashion, music, arts, and philanthropy.  This event was co-hosted by Amber Heard and Dree Hemingway, and included music by DJ Jus Ske.  

The evening raised $340,000 for The Society’s Pediatric Family Housing Endowment, which pays for overnight stays when children and their families come from out of town for treatment at MKSCC’s renowned Department of Pediatrics and are unable to afford this expense themselves.

On Monday, November 15th, the New York Premiere of the HBO Documentary Film: PUBLIC SPEAKING was held.  Public Speaking is a new HBO Documentary directed by Martin Scorsese and starring bestselling writer Fran Lebowitz, known for her unique take on modern life.  The feature-length documentary showcases Lebowitz's unconventional worldview and experiences and shines a spotlight on her trademark acerbic wit. 

The premiere was held at MOMA and the after party was held at the Four Seasons Restaurant.

On Saturday, November 13, LittleCollector.com hosted a preview party at Salon 94 Freemans.  LittleCollector.com is an online contemporary art gallery working with leading contemporary artists to create high-quality, limited-edition works for children and parents that will launch in mid-December of this year.  Their mission is to engage children with contemporary art from a young age.  LittleCollector artists, such as Inka Essenhigh and Larry Moss, were on hand at the family-friendly preview to explain their work to those in attendance: child and adult alike.

National Museum of American Jewish History Grand Opening Gala

On Saturday, November 13th, National Museum of American Jewish History Grand Opening Gala was held in Philadelphia.  The National Museum of American Jewish History celebrated the opening this weekend of its new national destination museum on Independence Mall, headlined by entertainers Bette Midler and Jerry Seinfeld at a gala dinner Saturday night and Vice President Joe Biden at a dedication ceremony Sunday.

On Thursday, November 11th, Bookmarc Hosted a Book Signing of LADY WARHOL by CHRISTOPHER MAKOS.  The new book, which features photos Christopher took of Andy Warhol in drag in 1981, is a must-have for any Warhol fan, not to mention any photography fan in general.

Christopher Makos has said of the photos in LADY WARHOL, "I do not consider them drag photos anymore, if I ever did.  They are not so.  They are a sort of a show and tell about identity, and changing identity, not really drag, not really Andy in drag, not really even Andy Warhol any more, but a record of a collaboration between the two of us: poser and picture taker."

The book catalogues, as he calls it, "a conversation."

Steuben Unveiled Art Works in Glass by ROSS BLECKNER

On Thursday, November 11th, Steuben Unveiled Art Works in Glass by ROSS BLECKNER.  Steuben.  The venerable American crystal company has been working with contemporary artists since the 1930s, and this series marks its return to fine art.  For this project, Bleckner created three original works with Steuben: Interaction, a large-scale painted crystal sculpture; Pharmakinetic, a smaller sculpture produced in an edition of 12; and, Forgotten, a open sculpture edition.  The themes woven through these new works are rooted in Bleckner’s body of work spanning the past 25 years.

On Thursday, November 11th, Silver Hill Hospital celebrated its 80th Anniversary with a Gala at Cipriani.  The Silver Hill Hospital, a non-profit hospital located in New Canaan, CT, provides quality inpatient and outpatient care running the gamut of psychiatric diagnoses.  Their mission, as simply stated by Silver Hill's President and Medical Director, Sigurd Acherman, is "to provide the best treatment for mental illness and addiction."

Co-chairs Michael Cominotto and Dennis Basso hosted the black-tie charity benefit, and all proceeds went to providing financial assistance for those who desperately need treatment.  In attendance were Joan Collins, Natalie Cole, Ann Curry, Al Roker, Fern Mallis, Hoda Kotb, and many more.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

On the last week of October 2010 Pierre Cardin visited Manhattan.

He received an award from a Cardin-clad Marisa Berenson at the Fashion Group International's "Night of Stars" gala, signed his new book CARDIN at Assouline and hosted his own fashion show at the very cool Milk Studios downtown.

All this was in celebration of the eighty-eight-year-old genius' sixty years in fashion.

Routinely unpredictable and eclectic, Cardin, a goodwill ambassador for UNESCO, is the owner of the historic turn of the century restaurant Maxim’s (as well as its varied branches and products), as well as Vaucluse Castle, once the Marquis de Sade's lair in La Coste and now partially restored, where he holds music festivals. He also lives part of the time in an antique, lavish and fabled Venetian palazzo Casanova called home..

On Tuesday, November 9th, MacKenzie-Childs, the beloved American home furnishings company, unveiled an Enchanted Holiday Extravaganza to benefit Best Buddies.  The event was held at its flagship location on 57th Street, and included a holiday preview that can only be adequately defined by their description: "must be seen to be believed."

The Glamour Women of the Year Awards were held on Monday, November 8th, and we were there to celebrate and document the GLAMOURous women being presented with awards.  Of course, Fergie--who is so glamorous that she has a song titled "Glamorous"--was being honored.  As well as the Oscar-winning glamor-goddess Julia Roberts and uber-glamorous designer Donatella Versace.  The lifetime achievement award though went to one of the great icons of girlie glam: Cher.  Others honored were: Queen Rania of Jordan, Constance McMillen, Katie Spotz, Dr. Hawa Abdi and various female sport figures and heads of state.

On Saturday, November 6th, PERFORMA presented The Red Party 2010 Benefit Gala.  It was a spectacular, one-of-a-kind PERFORMA Gala Benefit inspired by the spirit of Russian Constructivism.  The Master of Ceremonies for the event was one of the most acclaimed and incomparable actors of stage and screen, Alan Cumming.  The gala honored visual artist Shirin Neshat, a bold Iranian artist whose work often focuses on binary oppositions--male and female, light and dark, black and white, etc.  But this event wasn't black and white, it was The Red Party, and many were out painting the town red at this party and wearing red, as well.

On Thursday, November 4th, The Aspen Institute held its 27th Annual Awards Dinner.  The Institute presented Leonard Lauder, chairman emeritus of The Estée Lauder Companies Inc., with its Corporate Leadership Award.  Vartan Gregorian, president of the Carnegie Corporation, was the recipient of the Institute’s Henry Crown Leadership Award.  Institute Trustee Anne Welsh McNulty announced the winner of the third annual John P. McNulty Prize to John Danner of San Jose, California, co-founder of Rocketship Education, a national network of high-performing elementary charter schools whose mission is to eliminate the income achievement gap.

On Thursday evening, November 4th, the DIA ART FOUNDATION Held its 2010 FALL GALA.  It included cocktails, dinner, performances by Nico Muhly and Hahn-Bin and a viewing of the current special exhibition Koo Jeong A: Constellation Congress.  The event was co-chaired by one of the greatest living novelists Salman Rushdie, as well as Jimmy and Heidi Traboulsi.  The event honored the Dia Art Foundation's 36th Anniversary and highlighted its commitment to initiating, supporting, presenting and preserving extraordinary art projects.  Nearly $700,000 was raised on Thursday--money which will enable the Dia Art Foundation to realize many artists' visions.

On Thursday, November 4, the luxury fashion community and the North Shore’s fashion elite joined together to celebrate Hirshleifers’ 100th Anniversary at a glittering party featuring unique vignettes that illustrated Hirshleifers’ rich history.  Jacob Hirshleifer first opened Hirshleifers in 1910 as a fur shop in Brooklyn.  Over the years the buisness grew and changed, and has evolved into one of the greatest premier luxury specialty stores.

On Wednesday, November 3rd, was the FASHION DELIVERS 5th Annual Gala.  Fashion Delivers Charitable Foundation proudly celebrated it’s the 5th Anniversary Wednesday evening at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.  Fashion Delivers recognized three outstanding honorees who personify the belief that the fashion industry has a heart: Liz Sweney, Executive Vice President of the Women’s Apparel division of JCPenney; Neil Cole, Chairman, President and CEO of Iconix Brand Group, Inc.; and legendary fashion designer, Tommy Hilfiger.

Fashion Delivers is a non-profit which began in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  Its mission of donating and delivering excess new products from the men's, women's and home furnishing's industries to areas in need has continued to grow.  They have helped the victims of Hurricanes Rita and Wilma, as well as Iowa Flood Victims, among other people in need.

On Tuesday, November 2nd, was the PHOENIX HOUSE Fashion Award Dinner at the Empire Ballroom in the Grand Hyatt.  More than 600 members of the fashion industry gathered Tuesday evening to honor Ronald Frasch, Glenda Bailey, and Josie Natori for their contributions to fashion and their dedication to the Phoenix House Foundation. 

Phoenix House is a non-profit provider of substance abuse treatment and prevention services.  As Honoree Ronald Frasch explained, "Phoenix House has been there for countless individuals at their darkest hour, when they have had nowhere else to turn."  The event for Phoenix House, which raised funds for the non-profit and its initiatives, included a reception, dinner and speaking program, as well as music spun by DJ Donna D'Cruz.  In attendance were fashion icons Elie Tahari, Vera Wang, Catherine Malandrino, Derek Lam, Amy Astley, and many more.

On Tuesday, November 2nd, Founder and CEO of the Giving Back Foundation, Meera Gandhi, and wife of former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, Cherie Blair, hosted a Private Screening of Meera Gandhi's new documentary GIVING BACK at the Disney Screening Room.  The 23-minute documentary is about what its title implies: giving back.  It features Bono,  Kerry Kennedy, Steven Rockefeller, Clodagh, Homayra Sellier, Cherie Blair, Hillary Clinton,  Raj Loomba and vignettes from Mother Teresa’s Asha Dan in India, and there are many more people who give back that are highlighted in the film--all of these people have devoted their lives to particular causes that are close to their hearts.

On Monday, November 1st, the New York Public Library Honored Malcolm Gladwell, Ethan Hawke, Paul LeClerc, Steve Martin and Zadie Smith at the 2010 LIBRARY LIONS GALA.  The New York Public Library's annual gala honors important individuals for their contributions to the world of ideas.  This year's gala celebrates the work of those five individuals: author Malcolm Gladwell; actor, screenwriter, novelist Ethan Hawke; New York Public Library President Paul LeClerc; actor and writer Steve Martin; and novelist Zadie Smith.
